Black Ox Boran Stud

The Boran Stud

Designed by nature as the perfect solution for regenerative agriculture, strip grazing, and grass-fed beef, the Boran—with its unique genetic composition—is ideal for cross-breeding and yields incredible hybrid vigor in any cross-breeding program. Fertility under the toughest and driest conditions Southern Africa has to offer must be the most important attribute of the Boran. This characteristic ensures higher profit and greater sustainability for the beef farmer.

Having been in Africa for over a thousand years, the Boran is well-adapted to local conditions. This includes resistance to ticks and other parasites, making the breed less expensive to manage. The cattle have a smaller impact on the environment and deliver higher-quality manure, which in turn increases the number of microorganisms in the soil—a truly natural way of herding cattle, as nature intended.

The Boran mother can protect her calves against predators, and with great maternal characteristics and an abundance of milk, she can ensure a calf weight of 50% of the dam’s weight. The Boran’s mothering ability is proven in the excellent survival rate of calves, the small size of newborn calves, and the ease of birth.

The beef quality of the Boran is exquisite: it is fine-grained, tender, and highly marbled, with a superior taste. Scientifically proven, it ranks as top-class marbled Zebu beef.

The Boran has developed a calm, docile temperament over generations of living close to humans. They are also easy to herd due to their strong herd instinct, making it almost impossible to steal a single Boran animal from a herd—an ideal trait for areas plagued by stock theft. Longevity in both male and female animals is another standout characteristic of the Boran.

As both a grazer and a browser, the Boran fits seamlessly into any farming system. The future of sustainable, profitable, and responsible cattle farming in South Africa starts with the Boran.
